MANILA, Philippines – Newly appointed Commission on Elections commissioner Elias Yusoph has promised “never to compromise his office to sacrifice justice” and vowed to work for “honest and credible” polls.

Yusoph issued the statement hours after Malacañang announced his designation. He will replace the late Romeo Brawner.

“This is unexpected,” said Yusoph who was prosecutor of Marawi City for 31 years prior to his appointment. He is expected to serve as Comelec commissioner until February 2011.

Yusoph said his short term did not concern him and that what would matter would be “what we have accomplished as commissioners.” He cited the need to restore the confidence of the people in the Comelec’s ability to hold “honest and credible elections.”

“I have never compromised my office to sacrifice justice,” he said.

Retracing his career, Yusoph said he started as special counsel and then rose from the ranks to become city prosecutor.

He said that his joining the commission would be “a great challenge” and that he was willing to work on reforms to make the 2010 elections credible and was excited about poll automation.

He said he had faith in Allah who would not have given him the position if he could not help the country.

Meanwhile, Comelec Chairman Jose Melo and the other Comelec commissioners welcomed Yusoph’s appointment.

“He should be prepared to work very, very hard,” Melo said.
