TAGUIG CITY, Philippines — Local telecommunications firm Eastern Communications said it has achieved double-digit growth of 16 percent in revenue this year and remains on-track to achieve its target growth of 26 percent next year.

The 130-year-old telecommunications firm said that key to this target growth is the growing local information technology and business process outsourcing (BPO) sector, which posted 40 percent increase over the last three consecutive years.

Eastern Communications chief finance director Raul Pagdanganan said the “financial crisis” is an opportunity for the Philippines to offer a cost-effective solution for outsourcing services.

And seeing itself as part of the solution in the economic meltdown, Eastern Communications is now completing its installation of a fiber optic system that will cover Cebu until Tagaytay and Batangas. The optical system is set for completion by yearend.

The infrastructure has a bandwidth of 600 gigabytes and can serve up to 600 companies.

At present, Eastern Communications has 15,000 subscribers, mostly corporate and small and medium enteprises.

“This infrastructure complements the needs of the growing BPO industry in the country,” said Oscar Sañez, chief executive officer, Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP), during a briefing.

The infrastructure is aligned with BPAP’s goal to develop other cities outside Metro Manila as the next BPO hubs and in turn, decongest Metro Manila from further BPO center installations.

Sañez said the Philippine outsourcing industry will continue to grow to 6.8 billion this year.

He added the sector is on track to meet the $13 billion target in 2010.
