MANILA, Philippines – Leonardo Leonida was reappointed commissioner of the Commission on Elections by Malacañang and took his oath Monday.
Leonida’s confirmation by the Commission on Appoinments was deferred pending a public hearing on his nomination.
Leonida joins lawyer Elias Yusoph with ad interim appointments. Yusoph took his oath earlier on Monday.
Leonida, replaces the late Romeo Brawner, said Comelec chairman Jose Melo.
In an interview, Leonida said that he was glad to have been re-appointed as commissioner. “This will allow me to retire early as public servant,” he said.
Comelec commissioner Rene Sarmiento said the Commission on Appointments failed to confirm Leonida last February 18 because Senator Anna Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal requested that she be present during the hearing of the poll official nomination.
