MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) The Department of Health (DoH) confirmed on Thursday a second case of Influenza A(H1N1) infection at the De La Salle University (DLSU) in Manila, a 20-year-old male Japanese graduate school student.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said the DoH was checking if the man infected the first confirmed case of the disease in the university, a 19-year-old female Japanese exchange student.

The two lived in the same dormitory and had the same four classes, Duque said.

Some 1,400 students and faculty at DLSU who had contact with the two Japanese students were advised to go on self-quarantine and observe themselves for flu symptoms for 10 days, he said.

The DoH also confirmed that a 52-year-old Filipina executive of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Manila office, who arrived last week from the United States, also tested positive for the disease.

The new case at DLSU and the ADB executive were among the seven new cases of the disease that the DoH confirmed on Thursday, bringing the total number of A(H1N1) patients in the country to 29.

Duque said the DoH would not impose a 10-day work suspension at the ADB, unlike at DLSU where classes were suspended for 10 days, because the 52-year-old executive had “limited” contacts.

However, 12 people who had contact with the executive were advised to go on home quarantine and maintain a six-foot distance from other people for 10 days.

The five other new cases, all of whom came from the US this week, include a 12 year-old girl, a 16 year-old girl and her 18 year-old brother, a 33 year-old pregnant woman, and a 20 year-old man.

Since May 1, the DoH checked 414 people for A(H1N1), 29 of whom tested positive for the disease, 338 were cleared, and 47 were awaiting test results.
