MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is seeking the help of religious and militant groups to encourage Filipinos overseas to register to vote in the 2010 elections, as the August 31 deadline for registration nears, a spokesman for the poll body said.

The Comelec will write to the Iglesia ni Cristo, the Jesus Is Lord Movement, and the left-wing group Migrante, to “humbly seek” their help, Comelec spokesman James Jimenez Monday.

Jimenez said that with the three group’s help, the Comelec hoped to encourage 500,000 more Filipino workers and immigrants to register.

“We need the help of Filipino groups and religious organizations so they can encourage their congregation, chapters and members abroad to register,” Jimenez said.
