MANILA, Philippines – A children’s advocate group is looking for “child-friendly” leaders in 2010, as it unveiled its 10-point criteria for candidates on Wednesday.

“Akap Bata is now on search for child-friendly leaders, both in the national and local posts that genuinely represent and serve the interests of our young. In the upcoming 2010 polls, it must be our children who needs to benefit primarily above all else for they will inherit our society,” Akap Bata spokesman Nathaniel Ty said.

The criteria were unveiled during the group’s state of the children address, a play on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s State of the Nation Address (Sona) on Monday.

The group said the country’s next set of leaders should have integrity and good personality; no record of graft, corruption and criminal cases; experience and capacity to lead; advocacies that promote children and people’s rights; must have done services and programs for poor and deprived children; must have have clear, reliable platforms defending the marginalized and misrepresented sectors; a just position on various issues on children; could unite with other sectors to advance the rights of the poor; have ethical morality; and should be God-fearing.

The group put in the trashcan several paper boats to symbolize Arroyo’s failure to deliver on her promises.

In her first Sona in 2001, Arroyo claimed to have received paper boats from three poor children who were dreaming of a better life. The children supposedly let the paper boats float on the Pasig River from the Manila slums to Malacañang Palace.
