MANILA, Philippines — A newly constructed three-story high school building in Baseco in Intramuros was named in honor of the late President Corazon Aquino.
The “New President Corazon C. Aquino High School” will open later this month in time for the second grading period and will accommodate some 700 freshmen students from Manila High School, said Manila mayor Alfredo Lim.
“Naming a school or building a monument after the beloved President Cory Aquino would not even match the things and the extent of what the late president had done for this country. Kung ano ako ngayon ay utang ko sa kanya [I owe her for what I am now],” said Lim in a statement.
Dr. Ponciano Menguito , Division of City Schools-Manila superintendent, said the construction of the new school was requested by parents of Baseco students, who were concerned about the safety of their kids when they travel from Baseco, a village near Manila seaport, to MHS in Intramuros.
Engineer Walfrido Novero, Manila City Engineer’s Office designing chief, said his office is ready to construct new buildings in case there is a need to expand the building, which currently houses 15 classrooms.
Lim also plans to build a monument of Mrs. Aquino at the corner of P. Burgos Drive and Roxas Boulevard in Manila, but said he needs to consult with her children first about this project.
