MANILA, Philippines — Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III said he will pray to know if he will run as presidential bet of the Liberal Party for the 2010 elections.
Aquino has been receiving mounting calls to run for presidency, shortly after the death of his mother, former president Corazon “Cory” Aquino, on August 1. Even the Palace cited the young Aquino “inherited a legacy of leadership” from his mother and father, former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.
“Ipinagdarasal ko ‘yung desisyon. Ayoko namang magbitaw ng salita ng hindi pa ako sigurado. Sabi ng tatay ko kapag nagbigay ng salita, dapat pinaninindigan [I am praying for wisdom if I will run in 2010. I don’t want to speak without a firm decision. I remember my father once told me you should walk your talk],” said Aquino in an interview after the Mass commemorating his father’s 26th death anniversary at Ayala Avenue, Makati.
Asked when he will announce his decision, he said: “I will let the public know as soon as possible what my decision is on the matter. For now, I am really praying so my decision will be guided.”
Meanwhile, Aquino made a lashing remark against the Palace’s plan to build a monument for Cory at the Luneta Park.
“Naalala ko nung bata ako may nagsabi, konting bato, konting semento equals monumento. Kung hindi rin pinapahalagahan yung adhikain ng tao walang kwenta yang monumento na yan. Dapat sinusunod rin yung adhikain ng tao [Once I was a kid I remember someone told me a little mixture of rock and cement would result to a monument. But building a monument would be in vain if the advocacy of my mother is not honored nor followed],” said Aquino.
This week, reports are abuzz that Aquino’s tandem with Sen. Manuel Roxas II as the latter’s running mate for next year’s election will prove to be interesting.
