Comelec extends voters’ registration to Tuesday

MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Elections extended to Tuesday the nationwide voters’ registration, an official of the poll body said Saturday.

The Comelec is drafting an advisory to be disseminated to all regional directors, said Commissioner Rene Sarmiento.

Earlier on Saturday, Comelec Chairman Jose Melo said the extension was only for residents in areas hit by power outages caused by typhoon “Santi” (international codename: Mirinae). Read the rest of this entry »

MANILA, Philippines—Hundreds of Makati City residents continue to flock a satellite voters’ registration held at a mall two days before the enlistment deadline, a poll official said.

National Capital Region (NCR) election director Mike Dioneda said despite the satellite registrations held in previous months and the extension of registration on Saturdays and holidays since June, applicants continue to swarm Comelec offices in Metro Manila, signifying a signal of high interest among Filipinos to join the 2010 elections. MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Elections has been accused of being “unfair” by an official from the political party of jailed Senator Antonio Trillanes IV after its petition for registration and accreditation in the 2010 polls was junked by the state-run body.

The decision of the Comelec en ban second division was “prejudicial to the decision of the Supreme Court on their 2003 case” and a “violation of their presumption of innocence,” Ashley Acedillo, secretary general and spokesman of the Magdalo para sa Pagbabago, told INQUIRER.net. PPCRV is Comelec’s citizens’ arm in 2010 polls

MANILA, Philippines—The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has accredited the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) as its national citizens’ arm for the May 2010 elections, an official said Thursday.

Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento said the poll body promulgated a resolution on October 26 approving the petition of PPCRV. As citizens’ arm, PPCRV will assist the poll body in voters’ education on poll automation and poll watching for next year’s elections. Read the rest of this entry »

Dead ‘butanding’ found in Manila Bay

MANILA, Philippines— A whale shark, locally called “butanding”, was found dead on Manila Bay by local fishermen on Wednesday morning, according to the local arm of conservationist group World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

WWF Philippines information officer Gregg Yan said the possible causes for the butanding’s death include disease, gear entanglement, exposure to organic pollutants and ship strikes. Read the rest of this entry »

Voters without biometrics can still vote – Comelec

MANILA, Philippines – Registered voters who have not enrolled their biometrics data can still vote in next year’s elections, a Commission on Elections (Comelec) spokesman said on Wednesday.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez clarified misconceptions on the “biometrics requirement” and added the poll body discontinued for the meantime the enrollment of biometrics of registered voters so Comelec officers can prioritize the registration of voters until October 31.
