DoH on ‘high alert’ for virus outbreaks

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Health is now on “high alert” to address the leptospirosis outbreak in areas that were flooded by tropical storm Ondoy and typhoon Pepeng, its top official said Wednesday.

Leptospirosis deaths climb to 167–DoH

MANILA, Philippines—Almost a month after storm Ondoy flooded Manila and Rizal, about 167 Filipinos have died from leptospirosis, a health official said Monday.

The country’s total number of leptospirosis cases related to the Ondoy floods alone hit 2,158 with 167 recorded deaths—a threefold increase from last year’s total cases of 769, said Dr. Lyndon Lee Suy, program manager for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases division of the Department of Health (DoH). 148 die due to leptospirosis – DoH

MANILA, Philippines – Less than a month after most of Luzon was submerged in floods, the Department of Health (DoH) reported 148 deaths out of 1,963 Filipinos afflicted with leptospirosis as of October 21.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said of the 15 Metro hospitals that admitted leptospirosis cases, the National Kidney Institute reported the highest fatality at 48, followed by East Avenue Hospital (38), National Kidney Institute (15) and Quirino Memorial Medical Center (10). Ondoy, Pepeng victims can register on Sundays–Comelec

MANILA, Philippines—The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will extend the voters registration to Sundays for residents of areas that were flooded by tropical storm Ondoy and typhoon Pepeng, a spokesman said.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said the series of blackouts, flashfloods and landslides brought by the two typhoons delayed and stopped the voters’ registration within most of Luzon. Read the rest of this entry »

DoH warns against rise in leptospirosis cases in next two weeks

MANILA, Philippines—The Department of Health (DoH) on Wednesday warned the public against water-borne disease leptospirosis, which has infected close to 400 Filipinos in Metro Manila, an official said.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said after tropical storm Ondoy submerged about 80 percent of the region and nearby provinces, DoH recorded 383 cases from nine hospitals in Metro Manila—a number equal to about half of last year’s annual total of 769 total cases. Read the rest of this entry »
