MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Health (DoH) confirmed 131 new cases of the Influenza A(H1N1) virus on Wednesday, the most number of cases confirmed in a day so far, bringing the total number of cases to 604.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque said the jump in the number of confirmed cases was due to unrestricted travel, tracing of contacts of A(H1N1) cases, and high awareness of the disease, which prompts people to have themselves tested.

Of the 131 new A(H1N1) patients, 117 are Filipinos while 19 are foreigners, 66 are male while 65 are female, with ages ranging from two to 67 years old, he said.

Duque said the husband of the 49-year-old female employee of the House of Representatives, who had A(H1N1) before she died last week, tested negative for the disease (not positive as earlier reported).

The DoH, however, has not stated categorically whether or not the woman died due to A(H1N1) or her other medical conditions such as heart disease.

Duque said 43 more A(H1N1) patients recovered from the disease, bringing the total number of people who overcame the disease to 464, which represents 77 percent of the total cases since May.
